Appleby -in- Westmorland

Appleby-in Westmorland lies in the loop of the River Eden, overlooked by the Pennine range with the Lake District fells on the western horizon just a few miles away.

The former County Town of Westmorland an ideal centre for tourists of all types, now world famous for its Gypsy Fair in early June each year, but has still kept its old world charm.  A walk up Boroughgate can transport you back to Medieval England, superb riverside walks provides a perfect opportunity to experience the tranquillity of our unspoilt Eden Valley.

Carlisle Settle Railway

With the station only half a mile from the Royal Oak (Pre booked complimentary drop off available) the Carlile Settle Railway line is a great way to spend a day, a 72 mile journey steeped in history with regular scheduled service, it takes you on a journey through the magnificent Yorkshire Dales over the 24 arches of Ribblehead viaduct before plunging through the lines longest tunnell emerging into Dentdale.  The line leaves the dales for the lush rolling countryside of the Eden Valley and Appleby Station, carry on and you pass through some stunning villiages before arriving at the Border City of Carlisle. Why not try and catch one of the many authentic steamtrains that visit the station on a regular basis

Walking

Appleby lies in the heart of the Eden Valley an excellent centre for exploring the varied surrounding landscape, walks like the Pennine Way, Lady Annes,Westmorland Way and the Dales Way are all famous long distance walks, routes in and around Appleby with Murton Pike,Crossfell and High Cup Nick very close for daily hikes.

Cycling

The Town is on the North Pennine and Sea to Sea routes.  Many of the quite country roads  are ideal for day trips and are part of the National Cycle Route network most of the charming villages in the area offer resting places and refreshments for visitors.

Fishing

The River Eden is a hidden gem for fine fishing with the brown trout dominating the river, Cumbria has more fishing water than any county in the UK so you will never be lost for some somwhere to try.

Appleby Golf Club

A superb natural course unsurpassed for its beauty with some trully memerable holes and currnentley priced at only £18 per round (£28 per day pass) and £10 for juniors its represents great value.

Swimming Pool & Gym

Visitors are very welcome at Appleby indoor swimming pool and Gym (25 mtr pool and childrens separate play pool)  in the centre of the town at very reasonable charges.

Shopping

Visit some lovely small shops in Appleby town centre ,with Penrith less than 20 mins drive for a greater choice, why not take the Carlisle Settle Railway West to Carlilse (35mins) or for a more scenic trip head East to the bustling market town of Skipton (50 mins) or further to Leeds City Centre (90 mins).
