The historic town of Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the river Eden, overlooked by the Pennine range with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon, just a few miles away.

An ideal centre for tourists of all types and starting point for many dozens of walks over the surrounding fell countryside (as well as trips on the famous Settle-Carlisle railway), there are also a host of events throughout the summer to help you decide when to plan your visit.

Harness racing (May Bank Holiday weekend)
A popular spectator sport with horses pulling two-wheeled carts with bicycle wheels called sulkies.

June
Appleby Horse Fair (2nd week in June)
Four days of celebrations (including harness racing) leading up to sale day on the second Wednesday in June, a mile out of town on Fair Hill. Horses are lead trotting up and down lanes to show them off before the sales.

July
Appleby Carnival (second weekend in July)
Begins with the crowning of the Carnival Queen followed by the Grand Parade and features stalls, sideshows, sports, vintage vehicles, live music, duck and raft races and 'It’s a knockout'.

Appleby Jazz Festival (last weekend in July)
Featuring in 2006 jazz legends such as Don Weller, Stan Tracey, Art Thaman

Lowther Horse Driving Trials and Country Fair (1st weekend in August)
Now featuring a new Food Hall and Shopping Village, Lowther Castle is only 20 minutes' drive away.
